Bibimbap is known well as a well-being food all around the world and is one of the most well-known names in Korean cuisine. In Japan, Bibimbap is the most popular Korean dish. It even gets rave reviews from Hollywood celebrities in the likes of Michael Jackson and Gwyneth Paltrow. Gwyneth Paltrow is known to supplement her exercise regime with bibimbap as a part of her low-cal diet.
The Verb "Bibim" refers to the act of mixing different ingredients together. Combined with the noun "bap", which refers to rice, the idea of Bibimbap is born. Bibimbap is served as a bowl of warm rice topped with sauteed and seasoned vegetables of various colors and Gochujang (fermented chili pepper paste), soy sauce, or doenjang (a fermented soybean paste) and Sesame oil to be eaten with a spoon and chopsticks. Seasoned raw or grilled sliced beef may also be added, and a fried egg is often plopped on top. Unlike western cuisine sauteed in butter, Bibimbap only uses ingredients boiled in water, making it very low in calories. Bibimbap offers a truly unique package of flavor and nutrition in a single meal.
